Arvin W. Tongate 1926-2009
OTTAWA — Arvin W. Tongate, 83, of Ottawa, formerly of Marseilles, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 22, at La Salle County Nursing Home.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Seals-Campbell Funeral Home in Marseilles with the Rev. Betty Hornback officiating. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery in Marseilles. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
He was born March 20, 1926, in Mannsville, Ky., to Onie and Lottie (McDonald) Tongate. In 1946, he married Kathaleen Abell of Marseilles, who preceded him in death in 1990.
He owned and operated Tongate Sanitation until his retirement. He coached and was very involved in the Ottawa Youth Baseball program.
Survivors include four daughters, Linda (Douglas) Leach of Kankakee, Sheila (Danny) Burress of Campbellsville, Ky., Kathy Valle of Ottawa and Glenda (Dan) Williams of Alaska; one son, Willard (Kala) of Ottawa; 15 grandchildren, Kathaleen, Deborah and Paul Leach, Denis and Jason Burress, David and Rebecca Swiggett, Sarah Talkington, Beth Harvey, Lance and Amanda Valle, Travis Tongate, Nicholas Regan and Corbin and Eve Williams; 12 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Doris (Richard) Rollo of Marseilles.
He was preceded in death by his wife; a daughter, Florence Talkington; and one great-granddaughter, Katie Burress.
Memorials may be directed to Pet Project Animal Shelter in Grand Ridge.
Pallbearers will be grandchildren.
