Rock Vocalist. He was the lead singer of the 1970s music group Atlanta Rhythm Section. Formed in Doraville, Georgia in 1970, they consisted of former members of Roy Orbison's band The Candymen and the band Classics IV. Hammond would join the lineup in 1972 following the recording of their debut album, and from that point on they enjoyed commercial success with two Top-10 hits including their signature record "So In To You" (1977, reaching number 7), "Imaginary Lover" (1978, peaking at number 7) and their cover of the Classics IV's "Spooky" (1979). He would depart during the early 1980s and devote his time to writing songs, but would rejoin the group in 1987. He died from heart failure. (bio by: C.S.)
