Benjamin McLaughlin was the oldest child and fifth son of nine children born to Hiram and Olive (Towne) McLaughlin.

Her was married on 12 September 1898 in Calais, Washington, Maine to the former Augusta A. Scott, daughter of John Kirkland and Sarah Ann (Bryant) Scott. Together they had eight children:

1. Thelma J. McLaughlin Bush (1899-)

2. Nellie May McLaughlin Davis (1903-1995)

3. Dora McLaughlin Rustin (1904-1971)

4. Howard A. McLaughlin (1908-1962)

5. Floyd Guy McLaughlin (1914-1987)

6. Dorothy V. McLaughlin (1916-)

7. Rowena L. McLaughlin (1920-)

8. Geneva Frances McLaughlin Kinney (1922-2000)

In his early life, Benjamin worked as a lumberman and by the 1930s had established himself as a Railroad Section Hand and a Trackman. He worked well into his older years, retiring from railroad work in the early 1950s.

He was a devout man and along with Augusta, raised his family in the Baptist faith, following this religious preference from his childhood and family tradition. Benjamin was a very loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather and was a loyal friend to all who knew him.

Benjamin and Augusta were married for nearly 58 years, Benjamin predeceasing Augusta by only two months and 30 days.
