Served in the United States Army during World War I as a Corporal and Staff Sergeant in the Air Service of the Signal Corps, and served in the Army during World War II as a Captain and legal expert for the Allied forces. He participated in the D-Day landings at Normandy on June 6, 1944 and served with the United States Eighth Army in their drive towards Germany.
