Nancy graduated from Reagan High School in Houston, Texas in 1946 and attended the University of Houston for one year before marrying Tommy Lynn Matthews in 1947. She worked as a bookkeeper for Kraft Foods in Houston early in her marriage and again kept books for her husband's business when he took a brief hiatus from his career as a petroleum engineer. Nancy was a loving wife to her husband of 60 years and uncomplainingly accompanied him to where ever his job took him. She lived in Venezuela for almost 8 years where she embraced and celebrated the local culture; learned to play the Venezuelan stringed instrument, the quatro, and prepared local foods that her family loved, especially tequeños and arrepas. Nancy returned to the United States in 1960 to live in Houston, Texas, before moving to Lafayette, La. She lived in Lafayette for a total of five years before moving to Oklahoma City; The Hague, Netherlands; Madrid, Spain and returning eventually to Houston, Texas. During her years in Europe, she was active in the American Women's Club. After her husband's retirement, she lived in Groveton, Texas, where she resided until her recent illness. She was a talented, artistic person, learned to oil paint and china paint and took jewelry making and stained glass classes. Nancy and her husband were dedicated rock hounds and she belonged to the Houston Gem and Mineral Society. She volunteered as an EMS and at the local library. She was an avid reader and researched her family's genealogy. She loved animals and fed a large number of wild birds, squirrels and raccoons. According to her wishes, her remains were cremated and no service was held. Pellerin Funeral Home in Breaux Bridge was in charge of her cremation. The Advertiser, Lafayette, Louisiana, February 10, 2008.
