|Death: ||Feb. 11, 1999|
The 9th child of 9 of John Curtis and Eliza Janetta Dare Hollaway, Mary daringly left home to create a life for herself after high school. She worked as home help in Evanston and then as nurses' aide in Elgin Hospital for the Insane.
There she met James Clifford Martin, an orderly, and they married on Dec. 18, 1937. They had three children.
Cliff's work took him to Pontiac, IL where Mary kept house but, when he was injured and left on disability for a time, she took a job as clerk at Carp's Department store. Later she worked as nurse's aide at Humiston Haven in Pontiac to be sure all her children had enough to complete college.
She retired to AZ in 1992 for the gentle winters and to be near her brother Loyd.
Note: Although her legal name was Mary Alma, she had used Mary Ann until she married, so that is how many of her family knew her.
