Valina "Gertrude" Clepper McWilliams passed away in a hospital in Houston, Texas on March 11, 2011. She had broken her leg and she did not survive the
surgery. Her husband, Alton McWilliams, passed away in 1991.
Gertrude is survived by her daughter Delta Faye McWilliams Canon and daughter -in-law Sara. Grandsons: Kevin McWilliams and Bobby Boykin and Robert and Gary Canon. Granddaughter: Kelly McWilliams Powell. Grandchildren: Lee, Deke and Anna McWilliams, Marshall Brewster and Amy Anderson.
Alton and Gertrude bought the Waller Funeral Home in Waller, Texas in 1945 from Ed Robertson. They developed and improved the the business and were a Great Asset to the folks of Waller County and surrounding area. They not only operated the funeral home but back then the funeral homes ran all the emergency ambulance service for the area. They furnished this services for years (lots of time with out any reimbursement for this service) for Waller County.
Gertrude went back and finished high school and received her diploma. She did this so she could go to The Funeral Directors and Embalming School in Houston. She was one of the few female embalmers in the State of Texas at that time. She and Alton worked hard to make this business go and they lived on very little income.
Gertrude would jump in and do what ever it took to preform her duties. She often drove the ambulance and went on calls to wrecks by herself and then risked her life to rush the injured to the nearest hospital at that time (which was Memorial Baptist Hospital), at 600 Lamar at Smith Street in Houston, Texas. They were relieved of these duties when the cities and counties took over these tasks.
They buried lots of folks with little or no compensation. They opened a insurance business and a flower shop in Waller also.
Some years later, Mr. Cuney of the Hempstead Funeral Home, Hempstead, Texas sold Alton and Gertrude and Bob, (their son) that funeral home. It is now called the Mc
Williams Funeral Home.
Gertrude was a dear personal friend of mine and my family. To me she was a pioneer style person. She did what ever it took when it came up did not back up one inch. I never heard her complain about helping anyone, rich or poor. She always had a smile for you and a word of encouragement.
She continue to operate the funeral home at Waller with son-in-law Glenn Canon after Alton died and until she retired (only because of health).
She took care of her mother (Mrs. Clepper) until her mother passed away.
I greatly admired Gertrude and will miss her presents here on this earth. She was my friend and had a Great American Spirit. Gertrude was a christian and belonged to Waller Baptist Church.
As is stood by her casket this day and and listened to the many valued stories that each one had to reveal about her life and the strong character. I was amazed as they were all close to the way I knew her. What a wonderful
tribute to her.
Graveside services will be held for Gertrude MCWilliams on Monday, March 14, 2011, in the Fields Store Cemetery at Waller, Texas.
A Visitation will be held at the McWilliams Funeral Home, 706 Bremond Street in Hempstead, Texas on Sunday, March 13, 2011.
Gertrude lived to be 93 years, 4 months and 30 days old.
