Bobby "Bob" Chastain, 85, of Woodway, passed away Thursday, March 10, 2011, at Regent Care Center of Waco. Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Monday, March 14, at Waco Memorial Park.

Bob was born in Caney, Kan., to the late Elias and Alma Chastain. After graduating from Caney High School in 1943. Bob proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy and was a World War II veteran. He was a survivor of the sinking of the destroyer USS Johnston DD 557, on Oct. 25, 1944, in the Battle of Leyte Gulf in the Philippines. He was founder of the Johnston Survivors' Association. On March 4, 1948, he married Betty Lou Akin. Bob was also a Korean War veteran, having served aboard the destroyer, USS Shields DD 596. He and Betty moved to Texas in 1954. He was a 1958 graduate of Baylor University. Bob retired from Rockwell International Co. and Hercules Inc. in 1987 after 35 years in various management positions. In addition, Bob served many years as President of Rocket Federal Credit Union in McGregor. He will be remembered for telling stories of the sinking of his heroic ship in World War II, and for his unmatched sense of humor and love for fishing.

Bob was preceded in death by siblings, Ester Morton, Al Chastain, Mack Chastain, Judy Boaz, Bea Payne, Dede Brown, and Billie Muck.

He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Betty Lou Chastain; daughter, Teresa L. Ridlehuber and husband, Evan, of Bruceville; grandson, Joshua A. Baldwin and wife, Katie, of San Antonio; great-granddaughter, Lauren Baldwin; and numerous nieces and nephews.
