Actor, Film Director. Born Elwood Dager Cromwell, he was noted film director during the movie industry’s Golden Age. He made his debut on Broadway in 1912 and went on to appear and direct in over 200 Broadway productions. With the advent of sound pictures, Cromwell went to Hollywood and appeared in a few films such as “Close Harmony” (1929) and “The Dance of Life” (1929). He also started directing learning the craft of innovative use of sound for films such as “Tom Sawyer” (1930), “Ann Vickers” (1933) and Of Human Bondage” (1934). For the next two decades, he directed nearly 50 films to include “Little Lord Fauntleroy” (1936), “The Prisoner of Zenda” (1937), “Since You Went Away” (1944), “Night Song” (1948), “The Racket” (1951) and “The Goddess” (1958). He died at age 91 and his son James Cromwell is a highly regarded performer in television and films. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
