Alva Cokeley Dies After Short Illness

Alva Cokeley, former resident of Gridley passed away February 5, 1964 at Grace Hospital in Hutchinson. Mr. Cokeley became ill early in the morning and passed away after a short illness. Mr. Cokeley was born in Gridley March 13, 1899. And grew up in the Gridley community. He was united in marriage to Bertha Mary May Long in 1920, she passed away May 1, 1943. To this union were born seven daughters and four sons: Mrs. Gladys Avery of Barbeau, Mich., Mrs. Wilma Freeman of Osage City, Mrs. Marjorie Johnson, Gridley, Mrs. Ramona Yorgensen, Hutchinson, Mrs. Elsie Law, Hutchinson, Mrs. Veda House, Hutchinson and Rose Marie who passed away at the age of seven months. John Cokeley of Hutchinson, Major Cokeley of Haven, William of Pueblo, Colo, and Rex of Beaumont.

He was married to Jessie Reichardt, December 24, 1945 in Burlington and moved to Hutchinson in 1948 from Gridley. He was a guard at the Kansas State Industrial Reformatory.

Funeral services for Alva Cokeley were held Saturday, February 8, 1964, from the Elliott chapel at Hutchinson at 9:30 a.m. with Rev. William R. Stephens officiating. "The Old Rugged Cross" and "In the Garden" were sung by Mrs. Willilam R. Stephens soloist. Mrs. B. A. Thompson was organist. Interment was in Gridley cemetery Saturday afternoon.

Rev. Richard White held the graveside services at 3 p.m. Casket bearers, Scott Shaffer, Perry Eccles, Jesse Werts, Bill Varvel, L.B. Platt and Harvey Reed.

He is survived by his wife, Jessie Cokeley, the six daughters and four sons, Three step daughters, Mrs. Darlene Reed of Chanute, Mrs. Lilah Henshaw, Leavenworth and Mrs. Doris Stotler, Verona, Pa. One brother, Clarence Cokeley of Palco, three sisters, Mrs. Erma Wagler of Iuka, Mrs. Vesta Reed of Wichita and Mrs. Ida Reed of Gridley, 41 grandchildren and a host of friends.
