George C. Hagins Sr., 81, died early Thursday morning in St. Joseph's Hospital in Savannah after a short illness.
The Bulloch County native was a retired agent with the Life Insurance Company of Georgia after 28 years and also retired from the City of Statesboro after 18 years. He was a Past Worshipful Master of the Ogeechee Masonic Lodge No. 213 F&AM and Past Worthy Patron of the Blue Ray Chapter of Eastern Star Lodge No. 121. He was elected to the Athletic Hall of Fame at Statesboro High School in October 1989 and the Georgia Southern Athletic Hall of Fame in May 1990. He was a member of the Statesboro Primitive Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Lucille C. Hagins, Statesboro; a daughter and son-in-law, Deborah and Roy Thompson, Statesboro; two sons and daughters-in-law, George C. Hagins Jr. and Penny and Jerry Hagins and Linda, all of Statesboro; two brothers, W.M. "Goat" Hagins, Statesboro, and Harold G. Hagins, Yulee, Fla.; a sister, Sue Herrington, Lafayette; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
The funeral service will be held today at 4 p.m. at the Statesboro Primitive Baptist Church with Elder Shelton Mikell officiating. Masonic graveside services will be held at the Eastside Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be grandsons and nephews.
