Virginia Elizabeth Arges died peacefully in her sleep on Monday morning, June 6, 2005, at her Durham home, 2713 Circle Drive.
As attorney and journalist, sister and wife, mother and grandmother, Elizabeth was a passionate advocate for those she loved and who needed her help.
Growing up in McDowell and Mitchell Counties, Elizabeth did much of the child care in her family because of her mother's frail health. The valedictorian at Harris High School in Spruce Pine, Elizabeth studied at Berea College in Kentucky before serving during World War II as a pharmacist's mate at the U.S. Naval Air Station in Pensacola, Fla. After a B.S. degree in journalism from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, Elizabeth was a staff writer for the Knoxville News-Sentinel and in Washington, D.C., for the Bureau of Ships Journal.
After moving to Durham in 1953, Elizabeth worked in public relations and advertising before serving as a staff writer for the Durham Morning Herald. She specialized in articles about efforts to improve the lives of people, such as a front page report on findings that dementia symptoms in elderly patients sometimes result from greater sensitivity to pharmaceuticals. Concerned about access to legal help for poorer citizens, Elizabeth earned a law degree (Juris Doctor) from North Carolina Central University at the age of 62. She passed the North Carolina Bar exam on her first attempt and represented indigent clients for several years in Durham courts. A woman of deep faith, Elizabeth at various times served as treasurer or church historian for area churches.
Elizabeth was preceded in death by her husband, K. Pete Arges; her father, Fred McFarlan Hollifield; her mother, Fannie Renfro Hollifield; brothers, Jackie Hollifield and James McFarlan Hollifield.
She is survived by two sons, Michael Arges and wife, Patty; and Jim Arges and wife, Kris, both of Durham; three sisters, Ruth Young of Durham, Lois Young of Raleigh, and June Pannell of Bakersville; brother, Fred Hollifield of Durham; and five much-loved grandchildren, Tate, David, Christopher, Olivia and Kira Joy Arges.
The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Watts Street Baptist Church with the Rev. Mel Williams and the Rev. Diane Eubanks Hill officiating.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Clements Funeral Home in Durham.
Memorial donations may be made to the Peace and Reconciliation Fund, Watts Street Baptist Church, 800 Watts St., Durham, NC 27701.
Burial will be Friday at 3 p.m, at Snow Hill Cemetery on Slagle Road in Bakersville, in the North Carolina Mountains Elizabeth loved so much.
