St. Joseph County
Husband of Eliza Ann (Hemminger) Hemminger Baumgardner (1846-1897). They were married on June 28, 1866 in St. Joseph County, Indiana. John's first wife was Isabella (Dilworth) Hemminger. John and Isabella were married on December 16, 1859 in Marshall County, Indiana. John was the father of one son, Edward Hemminger, with Isabella and he adopted a daughter, Bertha Peterson, with his second wife, Eliza.
John was a veteran of the Civil War. He enlisted on March 5, 1862 in the Indiana 15th Light Artillery Regiment and he was mustered out on June 30, 1865 at Indianapolis, Indiana. He enlisted as a private and was promoted to Full Sergeant.
According to the 1880 census, John was the "son" of Daniel Hemminger and Susannah (Cox) Hemminger. Also, a biography by the son of John Albert and Harriet (Hemminger) Albert states that Harriet (the daughter of Daniel and Susan Hemminger) had a brother named John W. Hemminger. John's sister, Harriet Hemminger married her cousin, Abraham Hemminger. They are also buried in this cemetery.
Even though the 1880 census states that John W. Hemminger was the son of Daniel and Susannah Hemminger, I do believe that he may have been either their adopted son or their son-in-law. From the 1850 census, it appears that Eliza Ann Hemminger is definitely the daughter of Daniel and Susannah and she married John W. Hemminger. John W. is not on the census with Daniel and Susannah in 1850. I did find a "John Heminger born 1838 in Ohio living in Butte County, California in 1850 with James b. 1842 and Adam b. 1846 Heminger." This might suggest to me that John W. Heminger may have been the son of someone who went to California for the gold rush and who may have died there. I now believe that the 1880 census may have meant to say that Daniel and Susannah were Eliza's parents and that John was their son-in-law. To conclude - I believe that John W. Hemminger and Eliza Ann Hemminger were probably cousins or one of them may have been adopted and therefore, they were not brother and sister. At this time, given the dates of birth, I do believe that Eliza Ann was their biological daughter and that John W. was not their biological son. Another strong piece of evidence is the fact that Daniel Hemminger and Susannah Cox were married in 1838 and John was born in 1835.
