Walter M. Cork, Sr.
1918-2011
Walter M. Cork, Sr. passed away peacefully Tuesday, March 8, 2011 after a brief illness. He was born October 9, 1918 in Aberdeen, SD. "Corky" as he was called, was a veteran of the United States Navy. He enlisted February 13, 1940 and served in the Amphibious Forces in New Guinea. He served 2 years during World War II and 5 years in the reserves during the Korean War. While stationed in Pensacola, he fell in love with Annie Irene Cardenas Cork, his wife of 54 years. She preceded him in death in 1995.
Walter was a member of Heights Baptist Church. He was a member of the Elks Club, Lodge # 2108. He thoroughly enjoyed dancing and was a member of several dance clubs in Pensacola, including the Over 55 Club at Bayview, and the Grotto. He loved life and cherished all the good times he spent with all his friends and family.
He worked for several stores downtown and was the manager of Meyer's Shoe Store for 15 years.
He is survived by his sons, Walter M. Cork, Jr. (Ingrid) and David Wayne Cork (Judy); grandchildren, Andrew Cork (Cindi), Shannon Smith (Jason), Michelle Harding (Matt), Renee Caruso (Chris) and David W. Cork, Jr.; great grandchildren, Whitney and Ashley Stephens, Jacey Smith, Nicole and Christopher Caruso.
The family will receive friends from 5:00-7:00 p.m. on Friday, March 11, 2011, at Harper Morris Memorial Chapel, 2276 Airport Blvd., Pensacola, FL. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 12, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. at the funeral home, followed by graveside services at Bayview Memorial Park.
