Mr. Kenneth D. Tompkins, age 95, of the Clarence Care Center in Clarence, MO, formerly of Williamstown, MO died three days before his 96th birthday on Monday, March 7, 2011 at 6:05 p.m. in the Care Center.
He was born March 10, 1915 near Williamstown, MO the son of Earl and Marguerite Burgess Tompkins. He married Dorothy McDaniel on August 4, 1937 in LaGrange, MO. She died September 7, 2008.
Ken grew up in Lewis County, Missouri, was a member of the Bunker Hill Christian Church and the Williamstown Methodist Church. He was a 50 year member of Monticello Lodge #58 A.F. & A.M., and a member of the Royal Arch Masons. Over the years he was employed by the MFA Farmers Exchange in Williamstown, owned his own trucking business and worked for the Kansas City Board of Trade, achieving the position of Chief Grain Inspector.
Following their retirement, Ken and Dorothy traveled extensively in their RV. For many years they wintered in Mesa, Arizona where Ken enjoyed an active social life, including playing pool, silversmithing, and playing cards. He was a devoted husband, father, and loved by family and friends. He was an asset to his community and will be greatly missed.
He is survived by two children, Harland (Harlie) Tompkins and his wife Rose Ann of Chandler, AZ and Jean Gardner and her husband Bob of Anabel, MO; four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; and one great great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, three brothers, two sisters, two grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be Friday, March 11, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at the Davis Funeral Home in Canton, MO with Steve Beckett officiating. Burial will be in Zion Hill Cemetery near Monticello, MO. Visitation will be Friday from 1:00 p.m. until the time of service at 2:00 p.m. at the Davis Funeral Home in Canton.
The family suggests memorials be made to the Zion Hill Cemetery Association.
