CANADICE COUPLE HAS GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY
About 70 friends and relatives attended the 50th wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Swan held at Canadice church on Saturday, Jan. 22, 1955.
The event was sponsored by the W. S. C. S. and passed very pleasantly with visiting, also many pictures were taken during the evening.
Mr. Swan was born on the Andrews farm in Canadice, now owned by Mr. and Mrs. Ora Sce, and with the exception of a few years passed in Conesus and Canandaigua while young, he has resided in Canadice. He is now 73 years of age.
Destie Swan daughter of Edgar and Maria Webster Glover, was born on the former Clark farm on Bald Hill. She resided near Wayland for a time, returning to Canadice with her parents while still young, to the farm where Mr. and Mrs. Swan now reside. She is 71 years of age.
They were married on Sunday, Jan. 22, 1905, at Springwater, by Rev. F. H. Dickerson, then pastor at Canadice. They went by sleigh to Livonia Center to take a train to Pittsford, passing up the Hemlock station, as they learned some of the boys were waiting there to play a few tricks on them. In Pittsford they visited a relative for a couple of days, then went on to Rochester.
They have two daughters, Lunette Rauber, wife of Sylvester Rauber of Perkinsville, and Geraldine Cornish, wife of Harold Cornish of Hemlock; also seven grandchildren.
During their years of farming, Mr. Swan has had some interesting sidelines. He was Canadice town assessor for six years, acted as supervisor for 10 years, and since 1923 has taken daily readings of Canadice Lake water levels and temperature for the City of Rochester. For many years he and his daughters with Mrs. Swan's sister, Miss Jessie
Glover, played for dozens of dances all through this section. They continued until Miss Glover's death a few years ago.
Mrs. Swan is one of the few remaining butter makers on vicinity farms, although in late years she has tapered off on volume production, and is satisfied to let Roy do the heavy work connected with churning.
Mr. Swan's parents, Cyrus and Maryette Cornell Swan, were both born in Canadice, and their marriage was solemnized at Canadice Church on Feb. 25, 1862. Their golden wedding anniversary observance was held at the church on Feb. 24, 1912, under auspices of the Ladies Aid. This was the first event of its kind ever held at the church and was a most enjoyable occasion. Several attending Saturday evening were also present at the parents' observance. Other golden wedding anniversaries held at the church were: Mr. and Mrs. Martin Ross on March 4, 1919, and Mr. and Mrs. John Caskey on April 30, 1926.
Those present from out of town on Saturday evening were Mr. and Mrs. William Babcock of Rochester; Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Miller, Livonia; Mr. and Mrs. Harrison Becker, Livonia Center; Mr. and Mrs. John Foote and daughter Carol, Hemlock; Mr. and Mrs. Clinton Sears, Mr. and Mrs. Leman Mastin, Harold Mastin, Honeoye; Rev. and Mrs. Everett Fitts, sons, Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Caskey, Springwater; Mr. and Mrs. G. T. Toole, Wayland; Mr. and Mrs. Lynn Hoppough, Atlanta.
Refreshments were served and a beautifully decorated, three tier cake graced the table. Mrs. Babcock and Mrs. Cornish poured. A purse of money was presented Mr. and Mrs. Swan with appropriate remarks by Mr. Babcock and responses of thanks by Mr. Swan. Other gifts also presented. Many sincere wishes were extended for future years of happiness.
