Roger finished high school in Surry High School, Surry County, Virginia. Roger worked as a farmer in agri-business (poultry). Roger died due to a brain tumor. He was buried in Moore's Swamp Cemetery, Elberon, Virginia.

The Sussex-Surry Dispatch, Waverly, Virginia. of Feb. 27, 1969, pg. 9 reported;
"ROGER MERRILL SEWARD

Roger Merrill Seward, 55, of Surry, died Friday, February 21 at his home after a brief illness. Mr. Seward was a member of Moore's Swamp Babtist Church and he was also a deacon at the church. He was a lifelong resident and farmer of Surry County and the son of Edward R. and Martha A. Seward. He was a Veteran of World War II in the Army Air Force.

He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Anna Miller Seward, one son, Roger Merrill Seward, Jr., one daughter, Kathryn Tate Seward, one brother, E. Wilson Seward, all of Elberson and one sister, Mrs. Evelyn S. Johnson of Ivor.

The body was taken to the Providence Funeral Home, Wakefield. Funeral services were held at Moore's Swamp Baptist Church, Monday, February 24 at 2:30 p.m. with burial at Moores Swamp Church cemetery. Rev. James R. Luck officiated.

Pallbearers were; Griffin W. Seward, J. Harman Seward, Marvin R. Seward, Elbert C. Seward, B. Alvin Seward, Jr., Walter B. Rollings, R. Oliver Harris, and Albert S. James."
