| Birth: | Jan. 22, 1895 Saint Louis St. Louis County Missouri, USA | | Death: | Oct. 31, 1977 Mineola Nassau County New York, USA | Blues Singer. Born Irene Gibbons in St. Louis, Missouri, she was an early female blues singer and Broadway actress of the 1920s and 1930s. Her career began at the age of 3 when she joined Josephine Gassman and Her Pickaninnies and traveled throughout Australia, New Zealand, and the Hawaiian Islands. Eva began her recording career with Black Swan Records in 1922, then later with Okeh Records that same year. She made many of her recordings with her husband, Clarence Williams, who was a pianist and record producer. During the 1920s and the 1930s, she toured extensively with numerous Broadway productions, appeared on various radio programs, and recorded. She worked closely with her husband during these years. However, like many of the female blues singers of the period, work became scarce for Eva, except for occasional theatrical gigs. She retired from the music business in the early 1940s and except for occasional appearances, was almost completely absent from the music scene. Her career experienced a resurgence in the late 1960s and into the 1970s with performances throughout Europe. Eva Taylor died of cancer in 1977. She was the grandmother of the actor, Clarence Williams, III. (bio by: Adam Maroney)
