LONACONING Mabel Julia Ternent, 90, of 13 Front St., Lonaconing, died Monday, April 18, 2005, at Egle Nursing Home. She was born Mabel Julia Beckman, Feb. 22, 1915, on the farm of her parental grandfather in Pleasant Valley, Garrett County, the eldest child and only daughter of the late Courtney Henry Beckman and Stella Lee Rose (Gower) Beckman. Mrs. Ternent was preceded in death by three husbands, Hugh Henry Atkinson IV, in 1949, Homer Virgil Noel in 1952, and William Gordon Ternent on Oct. 21, 1997; four brothers, Herbert George Beckman, James C. Beckman, Willis Ellsworth Beckman and Leo Claude Beckman. Most of her elementary education was received from schoolhouses of Garrett County and at Luke Elementary, her secondary education at Bruce High School, Westernport.
Mrs. Ternent was a woman of diverse interests and endless creativity. She was a prudent homemaker, hooking rugs, knitting, crocheting, making jewelry, painting ceramics, and sewing clothing for her three daughters and herself. She was an avid reader of both fiction and non-fiction with an affinity of crossword puzzles.
Except for brief employment at West Virginia Pulp and Paper Mill before marriage, Mabel was self-employed. She and Harry owned and operated Atkinson's Confectionary, Union Street, Lonaconing for more than 20 years. For 27 years Mabel and Gordie owned and operated the Lonaconing Bakery, Main Street, Lonaconing.
Mabel was a member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church, Lonaconing, a past member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Lonaconing and Pythian Sisters, Lonaconing.
Mabel had a gregarious personality, and thoroughly enjoyed people. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, a wonderful mother-in-law and friend.
Family and friends will be received at Eichhorn-McKenzie Funeral Home P.A. ( http://www.eichhorn-mckenziefh.com ), Lonaconing, on Wednesday, April 20, 2005 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
A funeral service will be conducted at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, Lonaconing, Thursday, April 21, 2005 at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Richard M. Morley.
The body will be taken to the church one hour prior to service. Interment at Sunset Memorial Park, Cumberland.
