Singer. Billed as the "Queen of the Moaners," she was one of the most important female blues singers of the 1920's and 1930's. She began her career about 1910 as a singer/dancer on the black Vaudville circuit. She worked, for a time, with the legendary Josephine Baker. Clara recorded several duets with Bessie Smith, who was hailed as the "Queen of the Blues," as well as with other leading singers and musicians. She also appeared in numerous Broadway productions, including one she wrote herself, "The Clara Smith Revue." She died of a heart attack while working in Detroit, Michigan in 1935.  (bio by: Adam Maroney)
