Marshall was born in Akansas to Elias H. "Eli" McFadin and Sarah Jane Marshall. He married Victoria Era "Victory" Swiney the daughter of William Swiney and Nancy Holloway on the 1st of June 1860 in Scott County, Arkansas. Marshall served in the Confederacy during the Civil War. He was a Private in Hardy's Regiment in Akansas and then served as a Private in 2nd Company A 1st Cherokee Mounted Rifles Arkansas known as Stand Waties Regiment. Marshall's brother's Robert H. & Allen B. McFadin and three of his cousins Charles, Thomas & Thelbert McFadin also served in the same Regiment. (His cousin "Telly" was killed in the War)

Marshall swore in a affidavit for his brother Allen B. McFadin so he could receive a pension in Texas. In the affidavit Marshall age 73, Sommerville P.O. Chalk Mountain Texas, stated that his brother enlisted in Co A 1st Cherokee Regiment sometime in 1863. Marshall said he served in the same Company.

Marshall and his family moved to Fannin Texas in 1870 and then moved to Somervell county were he bought land and built a homestead.

The McFadin farm was located near the Erath county line not far from the town in Chalk Mountain. In the 1870's the town of Chalk Mountain had a Post Office, a gin, a school, a cemetery and two churches and a Masonic Lodge. It still stands today but is now a ghost town.

Marshall died in Hollis Oklahoma while visiting his son Dr. James Samuel McFadin and family and was buried in Texas next to his wife Victoria.
