Educated at the Harvard Law School, early in his career he clerked for Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis, prior to entering the Franklin D. Roosevelt Administration as Under Secretary of the Treasury. During World War II, he served at the Department of State as Assistant Secretary of State for Economic Affairs and after the war, he remained in the Truman Administration as Under Secretary of State for Secretary of State James F. Byrnes. On January 21, 1949, President Harry S. Truman appointed him Secretary of State and while in office he played a central role in defining American foreign policy during the Cold War. After he left office in 1953, he continued to have influence on US foreign policy serving as an advisor to Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson. He died of a heart attack at age 78.
