The death of Mrs. Cora Nye occurred at Petersburg, Virginia, on June 18, 1945, while she and her daughter, Mrs. Wilson Overturf, were enroute home to Upper Jay from St. Petersburg, Florida, where they had spent the winter. She had suffered from a heart ailment.

Cora E. Lyon Nye was born in 1859 at Valcour, New York, a daughter of Alfred and Sarah Lyon. Her family moved to Jay when she was seven. She was married in 1880 to Wells F. Nye of Jay. From 1907 to 1910 Mr. and Mrs. Nye and children lived in Elizabethtown while Mr. Nye was acting as sheriff of Essex county. Mr. Nye died in 1924. Since 1928 Mrs. Nye had spent her winters in Florida with her daughter, Mrs. Overturf.

Mrs. Cora Nye was a lifelong member of the Jay Methodist church and for for many years took an active part in all kinds of church work. She also was treasurer of the Jay branch of the American Red Cross for several years. She was noted for her charity and kindness to all. Hers was a life in which thoughts of self had no part, for she was always doing for others.
