Excelling in track and field at Pomona College, "Charley" became a member of the 1920 United States Olympic Team and competed in the Summer Olympic Games in Antwerp, Belgium.

He reached the final heat in his event, the men's 400 metre hurdles, in which he placed 6th. Had he run his personal best time (54.3 in 1920), it would have garnered him a silver medal behind a new world record in the event (54.0).

After the 1920 Olympics, Charley completed his education and became a science teacher and head coach of the track and field team at Santa Monica High School as well as managing mining interests inherited from his father.
