Lydia T. Black was born December 16, 1925 in Kiev. In 1950 she and her husband Igor Black moved to the United States. She completed her doctoral degree in anthropology at the University of Massachusetts in 1973. In 1984, Lydia began working for the University of Alaska Fairbanks. She published dozens of books and articles about Alaska Native culture. She passed away March 12, 2007 in Kodiak, Alaska, age 81. She is survived by four children who live in Wisconsin, Texas, Massachusetts, and Alaska.
