Caroline St. Clair (Sanders) Sterrett went to public schools in Princeton, West Virginia. She graduated from Danville Female College, Danville, Virginia. She also graduated from Meredith College, Raleigh, North Carolina.
She worked as a landscape artist. She studied art in most of the cities or countries where Douglas was stationed.
She was buried in Monterey Cemetery, Monterey, Highland County, Virginia.

Caroline Sanders Sterrett noted Raleigh artist and widow of Lt. Col. John Douglas Sterrett, died at her home in Raleigh on Thursday, Sept. 21, 1996.
Surviving are her daughters, Sarah S. Meyerhoff of Greenwich, Conn. and Martha S. Tempest of Houston, Tex.; a brother William H. Saunders of Princeton, West Virginia; and six grandchildren.
A funeral service was held 2 p.m. Sunday Sept. 24 at Hayes Barton Baptist Church in Raleigh.
A graveside service was held 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 26 at Monterey Cemetery, Monterey, Highland County, Virginia"
