John Douglas Sterrett went to public schools in Staunton, Augusta County, Virginia. He graduated from Randolph Macon College, Ashland, Virginia. He taught one year in the public school system, then he taught English at Staunton Military Academy, Staunton, Augusta County, Virginia. After which he returned to the Army to make it his career and retired as a Colonel.
Raleigh, North Carolina - Retired Col. John Douglas Sterrett, 62, died Tuesday night here of a heart attack.
He was born in Highland County, April 6, 1919, son of the late Robert and Martha Jones Sterrett.
Surviving include his widow, Carol Saunders Sterrett; two married daughters and a brother Robert Sterrett of Bridgewater.
A memorial service was scheduled to take place today (Thursday) in Raleigh. Burial will be in Monterey Cemetery, Tentatively scheduled for Friday.
Complete funeral arrangements were not available at press time."
