He taught one year in the public school system, then he taught English at Staunton Military Academy, Staunton, Augusta County, Virginia. After which he returned to the Army to make it his career and retired as a Colonel.

He was born in Highland County, April 6, 1919, son of the late Robert and Martha Jones Sterrett.
Surviving include his widow, Carol Saunders Sterrett; two married daughters and a brother Robert Sterrett of Bridgewater.
A memorial service was scheduled to take place today (Thursday) in Raleigh. Burial will be in Monterey Cemetery, Tentatively scheduled for Friday.
