A 1933 Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons graduate, she developed the "Apgar Score" system to test the health of newborn infants by delivery room personnel. In 1949, she became the first woman to hold a full professorship on Columbia University's medical faculty. She was the author of "Is My Baby All Right?" In 1994 she was honored on a United States postage stamp as part of the "Great Americans" series.
