James Howell died from heat exhaustion during wheat harvest in Gettysburg, North Dakota. He is buried in Clayton next to his wife, Mary Margaret Neatherlin Howell, whom he married Feb. 24, 1921 in Clayton, New Mexico. Three of his sons (there were nine children total) are buried in the same cemetery: Clayton Franklin Howell, Moral Earnest Howell, and Andrew Mack Howell. All three sons have military headstones. Clayton Howell survived the infamous Death March of Bataan but later died as a POW, and is commemorated at the Bataan Memorial in Albuquerque, NM.

His military registration card listed his birth date as December 31, 1898.

Also buried in this cemetery are James' brother Henry Howell, his second wife Irene, and Henry's twin sons (with his first wife Lillian E. Simpson) Clifford and Charles.
