In 1887, he left Delavan, Wisconsin to study art in Chicago where he would spend most of his life.
In 1911, Frank first visited the Indiana Dunes. His summer studio cottage (Cottage 108) was located in what is now the Indiana Dunes State Park.
Not only did he paint the dunes, he was a significant figure in dunes conservation.
From 1925 until 1943, the Hoosier Salon regularly displayed his works.
Once the state park came in, Dudley agreed to donate to the state one painting a year until 1952 in order to stay at his cottage.
"The Indiana Dunes Revealed: The Art of Frank V. Dudley" authored by James R. Dabbert was published in 2006.
