William Bodle was born and died in the East Sussex village of Alfriston, Nr. Eastbourne. However, he had spent much of his adult life in Southern Africa and, in particular, in what became Rhodesia, where he served as a Policeman, initially as RSM of the British South Africa Company Police (BSACP) from its formation in 1889, through to becoming the first Commissioner of the British South Africa Police (BSAP), as such, from 1903 - 09.
