At the age of 21, William Barton came to Oregon with his father, stepmother and 9 younger siblings via the Oregon Trail from Ohio. They arrived in Portland on Aug 25, 1851 where the rest of his family settled. William continued south to Southern Douglas County where he stayed with Hardy and Melvina Eliff (who lived in the second house that had been built there) until he took out his own claim in Cow Creek on June 6, 1855. William eventually ended up owning 37 pieces of land in Douglas County. His home was 2 miles northeast of Glendale on the land that is now referred to as the Sether Ranch. It is on this particular parcel of land that William and his wife buried their 4 young children and were also buried when they died.
