She attended school in Switzerland, the Packer Collegiate Institute in Brooklyn, and New York University. In the 1930s and 1940s she held several jobs, including one with an advertising agency and another with a public relations firm while she researched her book. In 1952 she published ‘Amy Vanderbilt's Complete Book of Etiquette.’ A huge best seller, it was later retitled ‘Amy Vanderbilt's Etiquette.’ Vanderbilt was hailed as the successor to Emily Post. With her success, Vanderbilt became the hostess of a television etiquette program, ‘It's in Good Taste’ from 1954 to 1960. She also hosted a radio show, ‘The Right Thing To Do,’ from 1960 to 1962. She also served as official etiquette consultant for many agencies and organizations, including the State Department. Vanderbilt continued to write, publishing books on everyday etiquette and cooking. She jumped to her death from the window of her New York City apartment in 1974. (bio by: Iola)
