Josiah is the son of Josiah Holmes and Ruth Cooke of Kingston, MA. Ruth is a descendant of the Mayflower Pilgrim(s) Francis Cooke, Stephen Hopkins, William Latham (died on the Mayflower) and daughter Mary Latham (first one to touch Plymouth Rock)and Edward Winslow.
His wife was Hasadiah Sturtevant. They were married in Kingston, Plymouth County, MA on 6 July 1769 (per Kingston Vital Records).
The family moved to Maine about 1779 and later moved to the Shaker Plantation in Cumberland County, ME (now Poland, ME).
