US Senator. He moved with his father to Fredonia, Kansas, in 1873, graduated from Baker University in 1886 and was clerk of the district court of Douglas County (1886-90). He was elected secretary of the Republican State committee in 1894, was a private secretary to the Governor, (1895-97), plus was owner and editor of the Salina Daily Republican and Ottawa Herald newspapers. Again elected secretary of the Republican State committee in 1898, he was Fourth Assistant Postmaster General (1897-1905) and appointed a special commissioner of the Panama Railroad in 1905. In 1909, he was elected as a Republican to the United States Senate, sering until 1915. An unsuccessful candidate for renomination, he served on the Committee on Expenditures in the Post Office Department and Committee on Cuban Relations. He served as chairman of the Kansas Utilities Commission (1915-18) and engaged in agricultural pursuits on his estate, until his death at age 82. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
