Birth: Feb. 3, 1835
Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany
Death: Jun. 4, 1911
Cook County
Illinois, USA

Eldest of 6 children of Karl Dietrich Zahn & Anne Margaretha Angst (1807-1859), Jacob immigrated about 1860 to Philadelphia. He came to Chicago and began working as a blacksmith with Johannes Knecht, who had married his cousin.

After brother Peter arrived with their widowed father in 1869, the three young men began a blacksmith and wagon building business in Deerfield, IL.

In 1863 Jacob married his first cousin, widow Philippine (Phoebe) Schneider Schenk. One of her children joined the family and they had four more children. Two of those sons died very young. Jacob purchased land in Ford Co. and moved there to farm..

He commuted between Ford Co and Deerfield. In 1884 he was treasurer of Zion Evangelical church of Lyman Township, Ford Co. The couple retired to Oak Park, IL about 1890 where he probably died.
