Born in Mauchenheim, the third son of Jacob Zahn (d 1824?) & Katharine Becker (d1820), Karl, a blacksmith, married Anne Margarethe ANGST (1807-1859) in Morschheim on 20 April, 1834. They had six known children, all of whom eventually emigrated to the United States.
After the Bavarian/Prussian War, the family determined to emigrate for a better life. The older children came earlier. Finally, Dietrich came on S. S. New York to New York City on 24 Jun 1869 with son Peter, daughter Sophia and her daughter Maria, after they had saved enough to join the rest of the family.
Karl died within a few years of arriving in America. In his will the family patriarch left $25 to home mission and $25 to foreign mission in the Evangelical Lutheran church to which they belonged. This was a sizeable gift at the time.
The stone says only Dietrich Zahn.
