Kenneth "King of the Missouri" McKenzie
Birth: 1797
Death: Apr. 26, 1861

Scottish-born McKenzie moved to the United States in 1822 and helped found the Columbia Fur Company. In 1827 the firm was purchased by the American Fur Company and became the Upper Missouri Outfit. McKenzie ran the UMO from Fort Union, North Dakota, where he was known as the "King of the Missouri," but when he illegally imported a whisky still into Indian country he had to leave the fur business. He retired to St. Louis in 1834, where he amassed a fortune. (bio by: Connie Nisinger)
