On October 14, 1780, the four companies of Montgomery County, Virginia Militia, together with North Carolina Militia, met and defeated the Tories at the Battle of Shallow Ford. Captain Henry Francis was shot through the head and killed (the only Patriot who died in the battle). His sons, John and Henry, also fought in the battle. Henry Jr. was only a few feet from his father when he fell. John then shot the soldier who had killed his father.

Please note: In 1780, the area in which Henry Francis was interred was actually part of Surry County. Yadkin County was formed out of part of Surry County in 1850.
