He was born on August 10, 1891 to Thompson B. and Laura (Blades) Stelle in McLeansboro, IL. Stelle graduated from McLeansboro Township High School and Washington University in St. Louis, MO. He played professional baseball from 1908-1913 with several leagues. In 1916, He was admitted to the bar and started working in law at McLeansboro. In 1917, He volunteered for the World War and was commissioned a first lieutenant. In 1918, while fighting in France, he was promoted to captain. He was honorably discharged on May 19, 1919. In 1937, Stelle became the democratic Lt. Governor of Illinois under Governor Henry Horner. He became the 37th Governor of Illinois on October 6, 1940 after the death of Governor Horner and remained governor until 1941. On July 5, 1962, Stelle died in St. Louis, MO. His body was taken back to his hometown of McLeansboro where his funeral was conducted at the First Methodist Church under the direction of Gholson Funeral Home.
