Porter Lawrence Houston was born on his father's farm about two miles west of Eldon, Missouri. He moved his family from Eldon to Lawrence County some time after the birth of his youngest son in 1885. Although he was a farmer his entire life, he invested in the small, short-lived village of Star. Also known as Bonham; Star was a railroad stop originally surveyed in May 1904. It consisted of a store, post office, blacksmith shop, canning factory and a few homes. By August 1912 Porter and Emeline owned lots 2,5,6,7, and 8. This was a little more than half of the entire village. Today it has reverted back to farmland.

Porter married Emeline McConnel on 21 November 1860. They had 12 children. Porter enjoyed a talent of spinning tall-tales and there were times when some could scarcely tell if he was creating one of his tales or relating a story of past history. He died of kidney failure at the age of 82.
