Alice E. Hansen, 99, of Aitkin died Saturday, August 25, 2007 in Laureldale, PA. She was born September 9, 1908 on a farm in Butler County, Iowa the second daughter of Gustavus and Clara (McCague) Hawley.
In December of 1918 at the age of 10 she moved with her family to the Cedar Brook area and then to Aitkin in March of 1919. She graduated from Aitkin Public School in 1926. She attended Normal School in Aitkin and taught at Longfellow School in Rossburg for one year from 1927 – 1928. On June 16, 1928 she was united in marriage to Reuben Edquist.
Alice went back to teaching in 1955 starting in Bennettville then Wealthwood and Butts all for one year each. In 1958 she taught 5th grade at Deerwood Elementary School for 8 years. During this time she was taking college courses part time from the University of Minnesota, Duluth graduating in 1966. She started teaching 5th grade at the Aitkin Ripple Side Elementary School in 1966 until her retirement in 1974. She was a member of the Aitkin United Methodist Church and the Adah Circle. She was also a member of the Aitkin VFW Auxiliary and American Legion Auxiliary holding several offices including Past President, the Order of the Eastern Star, serving in most of the offices including Past Worthy Matron.. She was a 50 year member of the Aitkin Rebekah Lodge #151 serving in most offices and was past Noble Grand. She was also Past District President of the Rebekah Assembly.
She was preceded in death by her first husband Reuben in December of 1978, three sisters Mabyrn in 1935, Margaret Hawley in 1997, Helen Drake in 1999, one brother Harold Hawley in 2005. Her father in 1946 and mother in 1949. Her second husband of 17 years Arvid Hansen died December 28, 1980.
She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law: Harold (Dorothy) of Jarrettsville, MD. two granddaughters: Sharon Edquist of Cape Cod, MA. and Diane Kahler of Nottingham, MD Three grandchildren: Adam, Maddie and Logan; Three sisters-in-law: Lucile Hawley of Sun City, AZ. Myrtle Edquist and Eleanore Skatt both of Aitkin.
Funeral services will be 2:00P.M., Thursday, August 30, 2007 at Aitkin United Methodist Church. Reverend Judy Clark will officiate. Visitation will begin at 12:00P.M. at the Church. Burial will be in Lake View Cemetery, Aitkin. Arrangements are by Sorensen-Root-Thompson Funeral Home, Aitkin.
