Ralph T. Katherman, Sr.


Ralph T. Katherman, Sr., 97, of Downingtown, passed away on Thursday, February 24, 2011 at Harrison House of Christiana. He was the husband of the late Mary Pettruny Katherman, with whom he had shared 32 years of marriage at the time of her passing in 2003.

Born in Downingtown, he was the son of the late Alanson D. and Ada Aumiller Katherman.

He attended Downingtown High School.

Mr. Katherman was a plumber by trade and worked for Glauner and Sons in West Chester for over 20 years. In 1970 he moved to Reedsville, PA and worked as a plumbing supervisor for Penn State University for five years, retiring in 1976.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Lewistown and of Downingtown VFW Post 845. He enjoyed woodworking, camping, Phillies Baseball, and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

Mr. Katherman is survived by his children, Doris DiMatteo and husband, Albert, Nancy Mendenhall and husband, Lewis, all of Downingtown; JoAnne Supplee of West Caln; and Ralph T. Katherman, Jr. and wife Deborah of Downingtown. He is also survived by his extended family, Danny Dillow and Peter Supplee. In addition, he is survived by his step-daughter, Martha Fisher and husband, Larry of Lewistown; and by 10 grandchildren, 4 step-grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, 9 step-great grandchildren, and 3 step-great great grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Eleanor D. Katherman, step-son, Michael Forsythe, 3 brothers, 2 sisters, and a step-great granddaughter.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, March 2 at the James J. Terry Funeral Home, 736 E. Lancaster Ave., Downingtown. A visitation for family and friends will be held on Tuesday, March 1 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. and on Wednesday from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home. Interment will be in Northwood Cemetery, Downingtown.
