Columbia Native John Frederick (Fred) Brown, 75, passed away on a Saturday in a San Leandro hospital.

Mr. Brown was survived by a brother, Charles Brown of Columbia; five sisters: Miss Nellie Brown of San Francisco; Mrs. C. H. Helm of San Francisco; Mrs. J. Clooney of Oakland; Mrs. George Griffin of Sonora; Mrs. Robert Thom of Sonora.

Final rites were held the Monday after his death. Reverend R. C. Stahl officiated at the services from the Burden Chapel. Graveside services were conducted by the Columbia I. O. O. F. and committal waS in the Columbia I. O. O. F. section of Columbia Cemetery.

Brother of Charles Augustus Brown.

James Brown was born about 1830 in Sweden. He settled permanently in Columbia and worked as a miner. Nine children were born to him and his wife, Elizabeth P. Brown, and they raised them all in Columbia.

Elizabeth was born in New York in April 1842. Her father was born in England, and her mother was born in Scotland.

The Brown family's value of real estate was $500 in 1870. The value of their personal property was $1,000.

James H. Brown, age 7, was their eldest child. He was born in California as was his siblings. John Frederick Brown, age 4, was their second son. Charles Augustus Brown, age 10 months, was their third son and child.

On April 15, 1901, Elizabeth Brown passed away.

In 1910, John and Charles Brown lived together in Columbia. Their divorced sister, Laura Harper, and her two children, Edna L. and Dorothy C., lived with them. Laura was born about 1879. Edna was born about 1899, and Dorothy was born about 1901. They were all born in California.

In 1910, John worked at the marble quarry in Columbia. Charles was a miner. In 1920, both men worked at the marble quarry in Columbia. In 1930, John labored steadily doing odd jobs while Charles was a miner.

The two brothers continued to live together through the years in Columbia. They owned their home, which was valued at $250, but did not own a radio in 1930.
