Actor. Born in New York City, he was a familiar performer in films and television best remembered for his roles as Phil Cavilleri in "Love Story" (1970) and as Jack Woltz in the original first film of "The Godfather" (1972) series. He began his career in Broadway productions, which was interrupted with his service in US Army Signal Corps during World War II. His post-war film credits were comprised mostly of unsympathetic bit roles until he gained status as a middle age actor in the 1960s and 1970s. Thus, he appeared in notable films such as "Cat Ballou" (1965), "Faces" (1968), "Clay Pigeon" (1971), "Framed" (1975) and "Hooper" (1978). In addition, he had great success appearing as a regular on many TV series such as "The Alfred Hitchcock Hour", "Ironside", "Cannon", "Hawaii Five-O" and "Greatest Heroes of the Bible". He died in Los Angeles, California, following heart surgery at age 77.
