Birth: 1866
Harlan County
Kentucky, USA
Death: May 24, 1898
Harlan County
Kentucky, USA

Son of John Morgan Gross Sr. and Alice "Alcey" "Elsie" Saylor Simpson. Brother to Mary J Gross, Richard "Dick" M Gross, America "Merica" A Gross, Hetty Gross, Sabra Perlina Gross, William M Gross, Franklin Finley Gross, and Nancy Gross. Half brother (through his mother) to Mary Jane Howard and John L Howard. John married Parley Cooper on 16 Dec 1884 in Harlan, Harlan County, Kentucky. John and Parley had 8 children as follows: Andrew Jackson Gross, Emily Gross, Nancy Gross, Jerry Grant "Grant" Gross, Charles "Charley" C Gross, Chloe Bell Gross, Effie Gross, and John "Johnny" Morgan Gross III.

Some say the following are the facts around the death of John Morgan Gross:

John Morgan Gross was waylaid and shot to death in Harlan by George Burkhart (husband of America Gross), his brother-in-law. Several months prior to this John and his brother, Richard "Dick" Gross, had waylaid and shot George Burkhart. George had recovered from this injury but was partially paralyzed as a result. Once George Burkhart had recovered he sought revenge with his gun.

However, the obituary for his son, Andrew Jackson Gross, indicates that John Morgan Gross was shot and killed by Jim Tolliver on the other side of Pine Mountain from Harlan. This could have been in the Straight Creek area.

Richard "Dick" Gross, his wife, and John Morgan's unborn child at the time (John Morgan Gross III) escaped the violence and left Harlan for Oregon.

Parley Cooper remarried to John C Wilson after her husband's death. Parley and the children were spread out across Tennessee and Kentucky living with family (Evans, Gross, Lewis, etc.) in the 1900 census shortly after the death of John Morgan Gross.

I am not sure of the month and day for his death. Others have indicated this as his date of death. They have also stated that his death certificate indicates he was killed by gun shot. I am unable to find a death certificate for him at this time.

This is my great, great grandfather.
