Johann Gottlieb Fichte
Birth: 1762
Death: 1814

German Philosopher. Considered the founder of Idealism and the heir of the Kantian philosophy. After studying theology at the universities of Jena, Leipzig and Zurich, he taught philosophy as a private tutor. The reading of the "Kritik der reinen Vernunft" was the driving force of his interest for the Kantian thought. In 1794, he was appointed Professor of Philosophy at the University of Jena, but in 1798 decided to temporarily leave teaching and devote himself to meditation. During those years Fichte developed his philosophical theories, shared by Schelling and Hegel later. In 1805, he taught at the University of Erlangen, and since 1806 until 1814 he was Professor and then Dean of the University of Berlin. Fichte was a great opponent of imperialist policy Napoleonic. For this reason he wrote and published the famous "Reden an die deutsche Nation", by which sustained the cultural superiority of the German people, encouraging it to fight against Napoleon. He wrote several books, including, in chronological order, "Versuch einer Kritik aller Offenbarung", "Grundlage der gesamten Wissenschaftslehre" and "des Grundzüge gegenwärtigen Zeitalters. (bio by: Lucy Caldarelli)
