Birth: Sep. 25, 1922
Limestone County
Alabama, USA
Death: Jul. 15, 1944, At Sea

Robert Lee Elders, Aviation Ordinanceman Second Class, died in his PBM-3s Naval Recon Bomber 15 July 1944 approximately 140 miles northwest off the island of Trinidad. He was stationed at Trinidad Naval Operating Base where he worked aboard a PBM-3s maintaining and repairing aviation armaments as well as handling and stowing explosives. On a routine anti-submarine sweeping mission (searching for German U-boats), the starboard engine of the aircraft failed causing downward spin. The crew disposed of their bombs and equipment in an attempt to lighten the plane so it would stable out but failed. 9 members of the crew were killed and only 3 survived on a life raft that was found 5 hours later at the site of the crash.
