Author. Born in Kennebunk, Maine, he was a Pulitzer Prize recipient noted for his historical fiction novels. After graduation from Cornell University in 1908, he spent eight years working as a newspaperman for the Boston Post. In 1917, he enlisted in the US Army and served as a Captain in the intelligence section during World War I. After the war, he was a journalist for the Saturday Evening Post, (1918-28). Interested in American history, his first novel was “Sun Hunting” (1922), followed by “Florida Loafing” (1925). Author of over thirty books, his works included “Rabble in Arms” (1933), “Captain Caution” (1934), “Northwest Passage” (1937), “I Wanted to Write” (1949) and “Boon Island” (1955). In 1957, he received a Pulitzer Prize special citation for his novels which contributed to the creation of greater interest in American history. He died at age 71 in Kennebunk, Maine.
