Rhodes Eldridge King was born in Stockdale, Wilson County, Texas, to John Edwin King and Hester Gertrude McIntire. He was named “Rhodes” after his paternal Grandfather John Rhodes King, and he was given the middle name of “Eldridge” after his maternal Grandfather Eldridge W. McIntire. Family and friends called him “Eldridge”. By the age of 16, both of his parents had died, and Eldridge became head of his family. Although his two sisters and his younger brother were separated and sent to live with relatives, Eldridge vowed to bring his siblings back together with him.

As a young man, Eldridge was a Texas Ranger. For a short time he put himself through Sam Houston Normal Institute, and he taught school. With the money he had saved from his work, Eldridge was able to achieve his goal as he brought his siblings back together as one family. Eldridge sent his two sisters and brother to college and university. Emma became a nurse, Edith became a teacher, and John Aubrey became a university professor.

In 1912, Eldridge met and married Alice Lloyd Williams, of Macon, Missouri, who was visiting a relative in El Paso. Together they had three children: Alice Gertrude King Hardie, Cecil Ruth King Eidson, and John Eldridge King. Eldridge and his family lived in El Paso, Texas until 1928, when they moved first to Jefferson City, Missouri, and then to Kansas City, Missouri, where Eldridge was executive vice president for the Loomis Advertising Company.

Eldridge’s wife Alice died of cancer in 1936. Eldridge remarried in 1939 to Edna Earl Childers. In 1950, Eldridge pursued his dream of owning a cattle farm with the purchase of Four Oaks Farm in Sullivan, Missouri. Eldridge was still working at the time of the purchase, but on retirement in 1959, Eldridge and Edna moved to Four Oaks Farm to live.

Eldridge died in 1965. Although Eldridge is buried in the Boeuff Presbyterian Cemetery, in Gerald, Missouri, with his second wife Edna, there is a marker for his grave next to his first wife Alice Williams King in the King Family Cemetery, with in the Stockdale, Cemetery, Wilson County, Texas.
